here are excellent local markets where you will find local produce for sale. The neighbouring village of Espéraza has a supermarket,banks and post office as well as the newly extended Dinosaur museum, this being and area rich in dinosaur remains. There is also the Musée du Chapelerie, the Hatmaking Museum, a remnant of the industrial heyday of the region which was famous for hat shoe and glove making. All now sadly gone.
Rennes le Chateau is a few kilometres away. Made famous by the books The Holy Blood the Holy Grail, the Dan Brown book The DaVinci Code and the books by Kate Mosse Laberynth and Sephulcre. There are guided tours in the summer months explaining the mysteries surrounding this beatiful hilltop village.
Rennes-les-Bains and Alet-les-Bains are two thermal spa towns dating back to Roman times. The swimming pools are naturally heated mineral water, leaflets with further information are to be found in the gite.
Puivert Chateau, Museum and lake - The chateau at Puivert is the mearest Cathar castle to Fa. About 10km away, it sits atop the hill overlooking the village of Puivert and its leisure lake. This is a swimming lake with sandy beach area and snack bar, a pleasant day can be spent sunbathing and swimming here. There are often night markets held during the summer when local wine and produce can be tasted.
Local towns - Limoux, Quillan, Chalabre, Mirepoix - All these towns have interesting markets, the Mirepoix market on Monday mornings being the most attractive. The towns have museums, chateaux, churches, medieval buildings and are all picturesque with plenty of cafés, restaurants, banks, shops and supermarkets. On market days they can be very busy.
